KKR's Opening Dilemma: who partners Finn Allen at the top?
Kolkata Knight Riders head into IPL 2026 with a problem most franchises would dream of having, with Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane, Cameron Green and Sunil Narine all capable of opening the batting.
The Realistic Options
The most straightforward combination is Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane. Allen is capable of taking the match away single-handedly in the powerplay, while Rahane impressed with a strike rate of 147 last season. But his runs last season came at number three. KKR might want to keep that solidity at three this season as well.
The second option is Allen and Seifert, a pair who have combined very well for New Zealand in T20Is. The chemistry is proven internationally but the concern is that fielding both means Blessing Muzarabani has to miss out, weakening an already thin pace attack that has been hit by injuries.
The third option is the classic KKR move - Narine at the top alongside Allen. It worked brilliantly in 2024 alongside Phil Salt, gives KKR a left-right combination, and frees up an overseas slot for Muzarabani in the XII. The concern is that Narine has blown hot and cold at the top of the order in recent times and is no longer the reliable powerplay enforcer he once was.
The Real Question
KKR's opening dilemma is ultimately a question of balance. With Allen and Seifert you have explosive batting but a lack of a quality fast bowler. Go with Allen and Rahane and you have stability but leave Seifert - who is in form - on the bench. Go with Narine and you risk consistency at the top.
Verdict
Expect KKR to go with Allen and Rahane to start. It settles the top order, allows Green to slot in at three and crucially keeps the overseas slot for Muzarabani with the new ball. But with Seifert waiting on the bench, this is a combination that needs to fire quickly.
